Unpopular Book Opinions

Hello everyone! Things have been a bit crazy around here with vacations and illnesses. I’ve had some ideas floating around in my head, but with all this congestion and fog, I’ve been unable to sit down and focus. Instead, I thought I’d do a post that is a bit more relaxing (to write anyway).

A Popular Book or series that you didn’t like…

city of bones, mortal instruments, clareI wasn’t crazy about Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series. While I got enjoyment out of reading the first book, City of Bones, the second one made me realize it just wasn’t the series for me.

A Popular Book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love…

26575I wouldn’t say that there is a series that fits this exactly, but if I were to pick the series that my rating is higher than the average rating, it would be Richard Knaak’s Dragonrealm. I haven’t read it in almost twenty years, but it holds a special place in my heart.

A Love Triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with…

Hunger Games, collinsEasily The Hunger Games.

A popular book Genre that you hardly reach for…

I have recently expanded my reading habits to include more non-fiction and thrillers, even if they don’t top the list. I’d say the one I am least likely to pick up is police procedurals.

A popular or beloved character that you do not like…

kingdom of ash, maasCelaena/Aelin from Throne of Glass was not a favorite of mine. I found myself getting very frustrated at her super powerful abilities and fickleness. But most of all, she was the worst communicator, and I disliked that she hid plans from her friends all for the element of surprise.

A popular author that you can’t seem to get into…

gunslinger, dark tower, kingI couldn’t think of an author within my normal fantasy genre, so I chose Stephen King. He has written a fantasy series, and I’ve tried it, but his writing style is much blunter than I like. I’m sure I’ll give the second book in The Dark Tower series a try eventually, though.

A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing…

Killing the love interest only for the sake of main character growth, and that goes both ways, though we all know it’s usually the female. I also don’t like when the problems in the novel could be solved if two characters just actually talked to each other. And I am starting to dislike the “man is mean to me, but we eventually fall in love” thing.

A popular series that you have no interest in reading…

I usually enjoy reading series that get a lot of hype or at least trying the first book to see what all the fuss is about. However, if it is urban fantasy of some sort, I am very unlikely to pick it up, so I’ll say something like The Vampire Diaries.

The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

ice and fire, martinMovie: The Secret of NIMMrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

T.V.: Game of Thrones / Song of Ice and Fire (due to the last two published books)

Hopefully, things will start to settle soon and I can get back to some writing. Things have been hectic as I finish up my copyediting certificate and attempt to start my business!
